London 2012 Gold Coins

With the Olympics and Paralympics in London coming close, the whole of the UK is preparing for this premier world sporting event. To cash in on this event, manufacturers have already started promoting the two events through their products and services. It is estimated that around 10,000 different products will be available in the market by 2012 and retail sales of around ₤1-₤5 billion are being estimated for such products. By the time the world’s most popular sporting event is underway, there is hardly going to be a single UK retailer who will not catch the Olympic fever.

Curiously, cashing in on the 2012 Olympics did not begin only this year. Efforts to promote the event were underway right from the moment London was declared the next venue for the next Olympics at the close of the 2008 Olympics at Beijing. By 2009, The Royal Mint, the leading manufacturer of gold and silver coins in the UK had released a ₤5 coin counting down to the event. The mint also released a commemorative coin celebrating the handover of the Olympic torch from Beijing to Great Britain.

Promotional coins for London 2012

Avid coin collectors who were following the news about the London 2012 promotional coins closely would definitely not have missed the chance to acquire them. Various series of coins were minted to promote the event. The sets of gold proof coins to commemorate the event were minted in 2008. Sadly, though, they are all sold out since only 3000 of them were minted.

Countdown series

The three coins, named “3”, “2” and “1”, mark the countdown to the 2012 Olympics. Each of these sets were also launched in consecutive years, “3” coming first, “2” coming second and “1’ coming third.

The first in the series of countdown coins is the ‘three”, containing a gold coin, a silver piedfort and a cupro-nickel commemorative. All the three coins come in a case from Royal Mint exclusively promoting London 2012. The case also comes with a certificate of authenticity, confirming their international tradability. The countdown ‘two’, the next in the countdown series, is a three-piece proof set that features a gold, silver and silver piedfort coin, each with the image of a runner sprinting towards the finish line. The ‘one’ is the third in the series with three coins similar to the ones in the second but featuring the image of a cyclist in the heat of a race.

Gold series

The coins in the gold series feature the classic Olympic designs of all the other coins. They are available in 3 different sets named Faster, Higher and Stronger with three coins each. The Faster series contains a ₤100 coin with one troy ounce of gold and two ₤25 coins of a quarter ounce each. Each coin in the set features the image of an Olympic sport along with that of a Roman God or Goddess. The second set, “Higher” captures the spirit of the ancient games played by the roman gods and goddesses in 22 karat gold. “Stronger”, the third set, very much follows the same style. The names of the three sets put together make the official motto of the Olympic Games- Faster, Higher, Stronger.

Collectors who are eager to acquire the promotional gold coins for London 2012 will have to buy right now, as Royal Mint has already sold 1 million coins and is running out of stock.
